I was contacted by the managing director of Obsessory and while she was searching for influencers, Dats Muzik came up. She liked the tone and style of my blog, which really caught her eye and I was exactly what she was looking for. A couple of weeks later and here is the guest blog post below.
Fashion takes form in the most unexpected places. Then, music videos are just an extension of creative arts after all. From Rihanna’s vintage retro ensemble in Work, Work, Work to Adele’s gorgeous floral Dolce & Gabanna dress in Send My Love To Your New Lover, we continue to get style statements that slay from our music idols. But, would you remember these, say, 10-15 years from now? Sure, retro styles and feminine florals will never go out of vogue; however, we’re looking out for those iconic fashion pieces that continue to trend on even decades after they hit our TV screens. And, that’s why we roped in blogger Francette Evans-Anfom of Dats Muzik! This pretty lady knows her music and loves fashion. In fact, she’s setting up a new channel/ blog, The Red Calabash, which will be dedicated to the amalgamation of the two. Without much further ado, here are her five all-time favourite fashion moments from music videos. What’s more, she’s even showing you how you can rock the trends in 2017!
Over To Francetta As an artist, musician or DJ, your style statement says a lot about your tastes. Also, if you’re a world performer, say, like Michael Jackson or Beyonce, chances are your outfit will go down in history as a major hit, just like your song did. Whether they were portraying a character, creating an attitude, trying to be trendy, or even shock-and-awe, the musicians that hit the high notes for me in terms of fashion were: Lady Gaga The artist is always memorable like Madonna, and that’s what makes her outfits iconic. While one always associates Gaga with her funky leotards and bodysuits, her stars and stripes bikini from the song Telephone featuring Beyonce was the one I will personally never forget. Britney Spears Everything from Baby One More Time’s tie-up shirt, to her red latex suit in Oops I Did It Again made Britney a fashion icon. But, after the many mid-riff baring tank tops and low-slung joggers, her suit and tie look in Me Against The Music featuring Madonna was the one that packed the biggest punch. She embraced androgyny, which was, and continues to be a very big trend. In fact, many designers insist on creating gender neutral clothes, which means her electric blue shirtless collar, black latex tie, and sheer bra slip were way ahead of their times. George Michael He was leading the pack in the ’80s with Faith. The ripped jeans, the hardware studded leather jacket, religion-inspired jewellery, and the supersized shades—who can forget those? Cheryl Cole Her military-inspired outfit screamed perseverance in Fight For This Love and was undoubtedly my favourite. Coming from a pop icon who managed to make it as a solo artist after splitting from her band, the style statement was almost poetic and definitely memorable for women everywhere. In fact, Riccardo Tisci created very similar military-inspired pieces in 2016 to commemorate 10 years as Givenchy’s creative director. Get The Look: 2017 Upgrade

Fuse ODG Don’t worry. It’s normal to not be able to recollect an iconic outfit, but the reason I love Fuse ODG is because the artist always wore caps with TINA emblazoned on them. ‘This Is New Africa’—that’s what it stands for. With African-inspired streetwear and his TINA caps, Fuse ODG embraced his heritage and culture and tried to popularise it ever so subliminally across the globe. That, to me, was worth making note of.
